Every summer for the last decade, Seabright's sidewalks belonged as much to commuters and beach-day traffic as to the people who live between Broadway and East Cliff. This summer is different. The Murray Street Bridge is fully closed for a phase of pile driving, foundation work, and new bridge supports on the south side, and the roughly 17,300 cars that used to cross between Seabright Avenue and 7th Avenue on an average weekday have been rerouted around Soquel.
If you live here, you already know the quiet. What you may not know is that the city, a UCSC student team, and about a dozen operators have quietly rebuilt the summer calendar to run on foot traffic instead of drive-by traffic. That calendar is worth learning.
The thesis, in one line
Seabright in 2026 is functionally a locals-only neighborhood for the first time in years, and the businesses that anchor it are counting on the people who can walk to them.
The Murray Street closure is not a small inconvenience. Seabright and harbor-area owners reported steep sales declines after the full closure, and with the shutdown expected to last through early 2026 and partial closures continuing into 2028, many worried the long detour could permanently change the flow of business in the neighborhood. The screen sits close enough to Seabright Deli, Betty Burgers, Engfer Pizza Works, and Seabright Social that the format works exactly as intended: pick up a sandwich or a slice, cross the street, sit down.

Linda's Seabreeze Café at 542 Seabright Avenue is the anchor. Open 8 AM to 2 PM Thursday through Sunday, the cash-only spot is known for hearty breakfasts, home fries, and a famous cinnamon roll. Verve's Seabright roastery is home to the roaster's headquarters, which means beans don't get any fresher, and you can see the work happening behind the counter. Java Junction on Seabright is the second coffee anchor and, per Spadafora's own reporting, one of the businesses most exposed to the bridge closure.
Midday
Seabright Deli at 415 Seabright is the sandwich institution. Locals aim early because the in-house smoked brisket sells out; the menu is built around inventive sandwiches like The Cove and the snapper-based Grotto, plus classics. Engfer Pizza Works at 537 Seabright is the other daytime move, with thin slices, memorable homemade sauces, and pesto and cupping-pepperoni options that have kept its regulars for years. Betty Burgers at 505 Seabright is open daily 11 AM to 8:30 PM for post-beach cravings, thick-cut fries, and a beer and wine menu.
Evening
La Posta at 538 Seabright is a neighborhood restaurant serving seasonal Italian from 5 PM to 8:30 PM Wednesday through Sunday, with a menu built around local farms and fishermen. Seabright Social at 519 Seabright, the space that operated as Seabright Brewery since 1988, is still the destination for handcrafted beer and a burger. Brady's Yacht Club at 413 Seabright is open daily 10 AM to 2 AM, a Prohibition-era bar that has served the fishing fleet, surfers, and beachgoers across generations.
For anything else, the harbor side is right there. Johnny's Harbor Side Cafe, Kayak Connection, and Pet Shop Santa Cruz are all inside the same working corridor.
The number that changes how you should read the summer
Look at that 17,300-car figure again. Every one of those trips was a small chance at a coffee, a beer, a sandwich, a bag of oysters. Removing them at once does not just shrink a top line, it removes the impulse layer of the business, the walk-in that the operator did not have to earn.
That is why the city response is unusually specific. Along with promotion through local publications, the city is offering complimentary Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce memberships, access to a $50,000 low-interest loan program, and expanded marketing for Seabright and harbor businesses. The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development at UCSC collaborated with the City of Santa Cruz on the project, and the CIED studio connects student teams with community partners on project management, website development, and social media.
That is the practical baseline. A city that normally lets small businesses fend for themselves is running a marketing campaign for a five-block stretch of avenue.

The line, from a city representative quoted in Edible Monterey Bay, reads as promotional until you sit with the 17,300 number. Then it reads as arithmetic.
A perfect Seabright week, in order
For residents who want an easy template while the detour holds:
- Monday: coffee at Java Junction, walk the beach at low tide from the Museum of Natural History end.
- Tuesday: pizza and trivia at Engfer.
- Wednesday: dinner at La Posta before the 8:30 close.
- Thursday: sandwich at Seabright Deli, movie on Murray.

- Saturday: line dancing at the Crow's Nest on the harbor side.
- Sunday: cinnamon roll at Linda's, then the harbor walk out to the jetty.
