Drive the stretch of Soquel Drive through Aptos on a Friday night and you'll pass three restaurants that didn't originate here. Each arrived in Aptos with experience from elsewhere in Santa Cruz County, sometimes built over decades.
The pattern is worth noting: a new spot on Soquel Drive or in Aptos Village may bring a history from elsewhere in the county.
The test kitchen was in Capitola
As Lookout Santa Cruz reported, Cavalletta is the Italian spot at 9067 Soquel Drive, a collaboration between business partners and chefs Shawn Ryberg and Nick Sherman. Sherman already owned a restaurant that had made its name in Capitola. The name "Cavalletto" means "trestle" in Italian, a nod to Sherman's Capitola restaurant, Trestles, an American bistro that immediately became one of the best restaurants in the area when it opened in 2021.
Before Cavalletta ever opened its own room in Aptos, the menu was already road-tested a few miles away. Trestles hosted weekly Cavalletta pop-ups on Monday nights for six months featuring the Aptos restaurant's menu while the team waited to pass final inspections. By the time Aptos diners sat down for the real opening, the pastas and wood-fired pizzas had already survived a season of Capitola regulars.
The location itself carries a second layer of provenance. It sits at 9067 Soquel Drive, just a few doors down from the Hideout, so a walk down that block now covers two of the corridor's most-talked-about kitchens in about a hundred feet.
Whale City Bakery brought its Davenport roots to Aptos
A similar pattern shows up a few blocks over at Whale City Bakery, Bar & Grill. As Lookout Santa Cruz reported, Whale City Bakery opened in the former Burger space at 7941 Soquel Drive as a second location for its Davenport restaurant, a Highway 1 stop since the 1980s. The Aptos kitchen is even run by a familiar hand: the kitchen team is led by Francisco Chagollan, who has been the cook at Whale City Bakery for more than 25 years. Owner Jimmy Armas owns both Whale City Bakery and Restaurant in Davenport and Whale City Aptos.
The menu isn't a reinvention either. The menu at Whale City Aptos is very similar to its sister, with all-day breakfast, sandwiches, burgers and salads, straightforward, mostly American-inspired fare that offers few frills but is nonetheless satisfying. Aptos got a second location with a menu shaped by decades of operation in Davenport.
Mentone brings a Manresa connection to Aptos
The most decorated example sits inside Aptos Village. Mentone is chef David Kinch's Riviera-inspired restaurant. As Aptos Life reported, Kinch opened Manresa in Los Gatos in 2002; it earned two Michelin stars in 2007 and three in 2016. When he decided to open closer to home, he told Aptos Life: "I wanted to be on this side of the hill."
Mentone has now been open long enough to stop being a novelty and start being a fixture. As of August 2026, Michelin's official guide still lists Mentone as a Bib Gourmand, the designation for good quality, good value cooking. The restaurant now serves lunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 2:30 pm, alongside its dinner service.
Down at Rio Del Mar, the same import logic shows up in a glass instead of on a plate. VSCK Beachside, the cocktail bar and kitchen at 131 Esplanade, is right next door to Rio del Mar beach, but the spirits behind the bar started somewhere else entirely. Venus Spirits was born on the Westside of Santa Cruz in 2012 by Sean Venus. The beachside outpost is the Rio Del Mar chapter of a brand that spent over a decade building its reputation across town first.

The Village stayed quiet. The corridor got loud.
Geography splits this pattern in two. Aptos Village, the walkable cluster around Aptos Village Way and Trout Gulch Road, holds Mentone and a handful of longstanding neighbors, and it has stayed relatively contained. The Soquel Drive corridor, by contrast, is where the imports keep landing: Whale City, Cavalletta, and the Hideout sit within easy walking distance of each other. If you're deciding where to park for a Friday night out, the corridor is where the newest arrivals cluster. The Village is where you go for the restaurant that's been the anchor since 2020.
Nearly 90 vendors at Aptos's homegrown market
The Saturday farmers market at Cabrillo College is another longstanding part of Aptos's food identity. It runs Saturdays, 8 am until 12 pm, rain or shine. The Aptos Farmers Market has earned statewide and national recognition, including being voted America's Favorite Farmers Market in California three years in a row from 2011 to 2013, and Coastal Living Magazine has also named the Aptos market one of The Coast's Best Farmers Markets. With nearly 90 vendors offering everything from pastured meats and sustainable seafood to handcrafted cheeses and Corralitos smoked sausages, it remains a homegrown part of Aptos's food identity. The restaurants and businesses above bring their own histories from elsewhere in the county.
One Saturday, sixty vendors, one park
Aptos's countywide food connections come together for one afternoon. Mark your calendar. Gourmet Grazing on the Green returns to Aptos Village County Park on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and this year's event features over 60 local wineries, restaurants and breweries. The vendor list reads like a tour of the county rather than a list of Aptos businesses: past years have included Café Cruz, Cantine winepub, the Crow's Nest Restaurant, Hula's Island Grill, the Penny Ice Creamery, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery, and Venus Spirits, alongside wineries from Soquel to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Proceeds go to Santa Cruz County cancer support organizations, and for one Saturday a year, Aptos becomes the meeting point for a food scene that otherwise lives scattered across a dozen zip codes.
The forest sets its own calendar, and it's older than any of this
Not every recurring date in Aptos revolves around a plate. The Forest of Nisene Marks, the redwood canyon that starts a few minutes inland from the Village, runs on its own volunteer schedule. The Advocates for Nisene Marks hold a September Trail Day on September 20, 2026, part of a maintenance rhythm that keeps 30 miles of trails rising from sea level to coastal mountains over 2,600 feet passable through the wet season ahead. Bikes and dogs are limited to specific routes: the Aptos Rancho Trail, the Split Stuff Trail, the Terrace Trail, and the Vienna Woods Trail, all below the park's steel bridge. Push further in and you reach the Old-Growth Loop Trail, an area many people consider the most beautiful place in the park, home to a "crazy forest" of unusual redwoods called the Twisted Grove.
It's worth naming this because it's the other half of what makes Aptos feel lived-in rather than curated. Some of Aptos's restaurants draw on histories from elsewhere in the county. The forest never had to prove anything. It's been doing the same thing since long before Highway 1 had a Whale City Bakery to drive past.
What the pattern actually tells you
These examples show how businesses with roots in Capitola, Davenport, Los Gatos and the Westside have expanded into Aptos. Together with the farmers market and local traditions, they give the area a food scene shaped by both local history and countywide connections.
